About the course
GWO Basic Safety Training (BST) – First Aid is a blended learning course that combines adaptive e-learning with practical classroom training. It provides participants with the knowledge and practical skills required to deliver safe and effective first aid in a wind turbine environment in accordance with the GWO First Aid standard.
The online learning component prepares participants with the required theoretical knowledge before attending the practical training sessions.
Target audience
This course is intended for personnel working in the wind industry or related sectors who perform tasks in a wind turbine environment, including offshore wind structures.
It is also suitable for employees whose job functions have been risk assessed by their employer, where GWO First Aid training is required to reduce identified workplace risks.
Course objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to administer safe and effective first aid in wind turbine environments. The course combines theoretical learning with hands-on practical exercises to build confidence in responding to emergency situations.
Course content
The course covers:
- The importance of providing first aid safely and in accordance with applicable legislation and recognised guidelines.
- Recognition of normal body functions and the signs and symptoms of common injuries and illnesses.
- Emergency response procedures in a wind turbine environment.
- Primary assessment using the A-B-C approach.
- Safe and correct use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
- Secondary assessment and general first aid techniques.
- Proper use of first aid equipment during realistic emergency scenarios.
Prerequisites
Participants must complete the mandatory adaptive e-learning component before attending the practical classroom sessions. The online training provides the prerequisite knowledge needed for successful participation in the practical exercises.
Certification
Participants who successfully complete the course receive a GWO First Aid certificate. The certification is valid for two years and must be renewed by retaking the GWO First Aid training before it expires.
