This course is intended for personnel who will use lifting equipment in their work. It serves as a foundational course for those involved in lifting operations, including crane operators, banksmen/slings, and signalers. For offshore work, the course corresponds to O-1.1.
The aim of the training is to provide a solid basic understanding of the safe use of lifting gear, helping to reduce the risk of incidents and accidents during lifting operations.
Who should attend
The course is suitable for anyone who will work with lifting equipment in connection with cranes, lifting devices, or rigging operations. It is also a required course for those who plan to become certified inspectors of lifting equipment.
Prerequisites
- Participants must be at least 17 years old to start the course
- Certificate of competence is issued upon reaching 18 years of age
Course structure
- Module 1.1 – 8 hours theory
- Module 2.3 – 16 hours theory
The course is completed over 3 days.
Course content
The training includes topics such as:
- Applicable laws and regulations
- Basic introduction to hazardous materials handling
- Health, environment and safety (HES)
- Competence requirements and control
- Construction and types of lifting equipment
- Discard criteria for lifting gear
- Use of wire ropes, chains, fiber slings and shackles
- Safe use of lifting equipment
- Use of load tables for correct equipment selection
- Signals and communication
- Weight estimation
- Wire ropes and lifting cables
This course provides the theoretical basis required to safely plan and carry out lifting operations.
